The Firework-Maker's Daughter

by Philip Pullman

Our current topic is...

Electrical Systems: Torches

Our P.E days are Thursday and Friday. On PE days, children will be expected to come to school in our new PE kits.

Homework is set every Friday and is expected back at school the following Monday.

Children are also encouraged to frequently go on TTRockstars, Spelling Shed (Assignments are set weekly) and Century. Passwords for all these sites can be located in each child's homework book.

As designers we will focus on-

  • use research and develop design criteria to inform the design of innovative, functional, appealing products that are fit for purpose, aimed at particular individuals or groups
  • generate, develop, model and communicate their ideas through discussion, annotated sketches, cross-sectional and exploded diagrams, prototypes, pattern pieces and computer-aided design

  • select from and use a wider range of tools and equipment to perform practical tasks [for example, cutting, shaping, joining and finishing], accurately
  • select from and use a wider range of materials and components, including construction materials, textiles and ingredients, according to their functional properties and aesthetic qualities

  • investigate and analyse a range of existing products
  • evaluate their ideas and products against their own design criteria and consider the views of others to improve their work

Technical knowledge

  • apply their understanding of how to strengthen, stiffen and reinforce more complex structures
  • understand and use electrical systems in their products [for example, series circuits incorporating switches, bulbs, buzzers and motors]

We will be starting a new writing unit based on the book 'The Lost Happy Endings' by Carol Ann Duffy and Jane Ray. We will be writing a twisted narrative and a persuasive letter.

Our maths work this term will follow the White Rose scheme of learning, we will be looking at Measurements: Length & Perimeter and Number: Multiplication & Division.

To help develop children’s fluency in mathematics, we also ask each child to learn Key Instant Recall Facts each half term. We expect children to practise their KIRFs as part of their homework. Please work on the KIRFs for Spring 2.
