What's Out There?

Children will learn about space. This topic will launch us straight into the Solar System and then look at how ideas about how space have changed over time, before finally exploring what causes us to experience night and day on Earth.

As scientists we will be:

  • describe the movement of the Earth and other planets relative to the sun in the solar system
  • describe the movement of the moon relative to the Earth
  • describe the sun, Earth and moon as approximately spherical bodies
  • use the idea of the Earth’s rotation to explain day and night and the apparent movement of the sun across the sky

To support our  learning we will be using Cosmic by Frank Cottrell-Boyce, The Darkest Dark- Chris Hadfield and Where we Once Stood- Christopher Riley and Martin Impey,  which will be our stimulus for writing.
