In Religious Education, our aim is for children to investigate and reflect on some of the most fundamental questions asked by people, engage with different faiths, values and traditions and develop a deep understanding of the beliefs and practices that influence cultures and societies in our community and around the world.
At High Legh Primary School, we teach through enquiry based topics using engaging encounters with people with different beliefs and worldviews whether in person or through stories. We learn about a variety of beliefs including Christianity, Hinduism, Islam and Judaism by exploring stories from sacred texts and visiting local places of worship. In each enquiry, children reflect on what it means to have a faith and to develop their own spiritual knowledge and understanding as they learn from religions and express their own beliefs.
The Religious Education curriculum forms an important part of our school’s spiritual, moral, social and cultural teaching. It also promotes education for citizenship and Philosophy for Children (P4C).
The legal position of religious education
At High Legh Primary School, Religious Education is taught in accordance with the Cheshire East Agreed Syllabus and meets the requirements of the Education Reform Act 1988. We believe that Religious Education plays an important role in helping children develop an understanding of different beliefs, cultures and worldviews, while promoting respect, tolerance and reflection. Parents have the legal right to withdraw their child from all or part of Religious Education. If you are considering this, we encourage you to discuss the matter with the Headteacher so that we can ensure you have all the relevant information and make appropriate arrangements for your child.
