Summer topic 4

Electrical systems - Torches

image

This is a Design and Technology based topic. We will begin our topic by writing a questionaire to ask the reception class about what torch they would like. We are using our learning from our electricity topic and apply this to make torhces. Through the topic we are learning to:

Science:

  • constructing a simple series electrical circuit, identifying and naming its basic parts, including cells, wires, bulbs, switches and buzzers
  • recognising that a switch opens and closes a circuit and associate this with whether or not a lamp lights in a simple series circuit
  • recognising some common conductors and insulators, and associate metals with being good conductors

Design and Technology:

  • use research and develop design criteria to inform the design of innovative, functional, appealing products that are fit for purpose, aimed at particular individuals or groups
  • generate, develop, model and communicate their ideas through discussion and annotated sketches
  • select from and use a wider range of tools and equipment to perform practical tasks [for example, cutting, shaping, joining and finishing], accurately
  • select from and use a wider range of materials and components, including construction materials, textiles and ingredients, according to their functional properties and aesthetic qualities
  • evaluate their ideas and products against their own design criteria and consider the views of others to improve their work

Technical knowledge

  • understand and use electrical systems in their products [for example, series circuits incorporating switches, bulbs, buzzers and motors]

English

We are writing stories based on the book 'Arthur and the Golden Rope' by Joe Todd-Stanton. We will be writing a myth narrative and later an instruction guide.
