Art and Design

Subject Aims, Values and Purpose

At High Legh Primary, Art is a unique subject that enables pupils to become part of and develop their own environment.  Art and Design is the creative and aesthetic response to the visual and tactile qualities of the world around us. Art education has two strands: investigating and making and knowledge and understanding. The investigating and making element involves children using a variety of materials, equipment and techniques. The knowledge and understanding element enables pupils to develop skills in evaluating their own work and that of other artists, and to understand the value, significance and impact of art in society.

We are inclusive of all abilities and cultures in our artwork, and we like to explore the art of different religious and cultural traditions.

In the art curriculum children develop their knowledge, skills and understanding through activities linked to their topic work, and in Foundation Stage we recognise that Art is an important area in which children can develop their fine motor skills, co-ordination and concentration, and provides a unique opportunity to embrace their imagination. Each year group covers progressively more complex aspects of the Art curriculum.  These include drawing, painting, printing, sculpture and textiles, as defined by the milestones in the new curriculum. Throughout the year groups, children use sketchbooks to explore, annotate and develop their ideas.

We are proud to celebrate our creativity and diversity through our displays and we hope they reflect the wonderful learning environment that is High Legh Primary.

Enrichment

We often work closely with professional artists and throughout the school you will see a wide variety of art displayed. A graffiti art group came to the school to work alongside the Year 5 and 6 children to create a wonderful graffiti mural on our playground walls.  We are also really lucky to have local artist Sally Talbot visit us in school to help the children in Class 2 design and create their own Stick Man.

At High Legh we run an after school Art club for Key Stage One children on Wednesday afternoons.
