Foundation Stage

At High Legh our Foundation Stage curriculum is based on the current interests of children, and we aim to provide a rich, stimulating and relevant curriculum.  We adopt a thematic approach to our teaching where the children’s voice is heard, they help us choose themes and topics which reflect their current interests. We will regularly inform families about current topics through our half-termly topic webs and throughout the year we invite parents & carers to attend a range of 'Stay and Play' sessions where they can meet other parents and develop ideas for supporting their child's learning.

Learning experiences in Reception are play based, fun and often very messy!  Learning is geared around specifically planned teacher led models, where children are offered a wide range of opportunities to apply their knowledge and understanding in a fun and creative way. We empower children to take ownership of their learning, offering them a wide range of learning opportunities both indoor and outdoor. These areas are accessible to children continually throughout the day.

The Foundation Stage follows the revised Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), which became statutory in September 2012.  This revised framework focuses on the three prime areas of learning most essential for children’s readiness, not only for school, but for all of their future developmental needs.

These are:
  • Personal, social and emotional development
  • Communication and language
  • Physical development.
In addition there are four specific areas of learning:
  • Literacy (including Phonics)
  • Mathematics
  • Understanding the world
  • Expressive arts and design

We aim to make our daily phonics sessions fun, stimulating and engaging. Daily discrete Phonics sessions are taught to all children and these flow into all areas of our curriculum.  We use Jolly Phonics resources and follow the Letters and Sounds programme of study.

We have recently started to develop a new exciting Outdoor area for the Reception Class. The children have access to this area on a daily basis and we plan outdoor learning opportunities for the children each day, as well as using our outdoor area to enhance our topic work.
