Aims, values and purposes

The official documentation, which sets out what children are expected to know in each year group is available here: Mathematics national curriculum programmes of study: KS1 & 2.

The aims of this curriculum are to ensure that pupils:

  • become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics, including through varied and frequent practice with increasingly complex problems over time, so that pupils develop conceptual understanding and the ability to recall and apply knowledge rapidly and accurately.
  • reason mathematically by following a line of enquiry, conjecturing relationships and generalisations, and developing an argument, justification or proof using mathematical language
  • can solve problems by applying their mathematics to a variety of routine and non-routine problems with increasing sophistication, including breaking down problems into a series of simpler steps and persevering in seeking solutions.

Maths Videos
Over the next few months, we will be adding some videos to support parents in understanding how we teach maths at High Legh.

How to Help Your Child at Home

KIRFs – Key Instant Recall Facts

KIRFs are closely aligned with the curriculum, with specific half-termly targets for each year group.  We expect the majority of children within a year group to be working towards these targets. Children are expected to practise these facts at least three times per week.  If your child is struggling to recall facts, please concentrate on a smaller number and practise more frequently.

Enrichment
We aim to provide children with rich and exciting Mathematics throughout their Maths lessons at High Legh. As a school, we are looking at ways of promoting deep learning to challenge all children. We also offer some opportunities for children to engage in Maths beyond the classroom.

In Year 1, having visited Manchester Airport and spent time the children have been making dials for a plane flight deck, using varying scales. In Year 2, the children use cups to support their learning in Number! And, in Year 3, the children use concrete place value resources to support their learning of place value.

Links
There are loads of great internet sites for children to practise their Maths skills.  Please let us know if you know of any that should be added to this list.

BBC Website  – Good for everything – cbeebies, bitesize, schools etc.
A Maths Dictionary for Kids  – very good for looking up maths words etc
Maths is Fun – fun games and explanations of mathematical concepts
Mr Nussbaum – good games and fun maths
